The 20-20-20 rule, explained

If your eyes feel dry, tired, or hard to focus after a long stretch at the screen, the 20-20-20 rule is the simplest habit that helps. It is widely recommended by eye-care professionals as an easy way to give your eyes regular rest during screen work.

What the rule is

Every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet (about 6 metres) away for at least 20 seconds. That is the whole rule.

The point is to break the close, fixed focus that screen work demands. When you look at something far away, the focusing muscles in your eyes relax, and a short, deliberate pause also nudges you to blink more, both of which ease the tired, dry feeling that builds up over a work session.

Why screen work tires your eyes

Staring at a screen holds your eyes at one fixed distance for long periods, and people tend to blink noticeably less while concentrating. The combination is what many clinicians call digital eye strain: dry eyes, blurriness, and that "heavy" feeling late in the day. The 20-20-20 rule does not cure anything; it simply interrupts the pattern often enough to keep it from piling up.

The hard part: remembering

The rule is easy to understand and almost impossible to keep on your own. When you are focused, 20 minutes vanishes, and that is exactly when you most need the break and least notice the time. This is the gap a gentle reminder fills.

How to actually do it

  • Pick a far point you can glance at: a window, a hallway, a wall across the room.
  • When the 20 minutes is up, look at it and let your eyes settle for a slow count of 20.
  • Stand up or stretch while you are at it; the break does double duty.
  • Use a reminder so you do not have to track the time yourself.

How ScreenGuardian helps

ScreenGuardian includes a built-in 20-20-20 reminder that fits into your work rhythm instead of nagging you. It runs entirely on your device, no account needed for the reminders, and nothing about your screen time leaves your computer. You can see how it works on the features page, or read about how far to sit from your screen and fixing desk posture next.

Common questions

Does the 20-20-20 rule actually work?

It is a comfort habit, not a treatment. Many people find it noticeably eases tired, dry eyes during long screen sessions, and it costs nothing to try. If you have persistent eye pain or vision changes, see an eye-care professional; a habit is not a substitute for advice.

What if I cannot see 20 feet away?

Look at the farthest point you can: across the room or out a window. The benefit comes from relaxing your focus on something distant; the exact distance matters less than the change.
