Your data and privacy

ScreenGuardian is local-first by design. The camera is how it sees your posture, so privacy is not a setting bolted on afterward, it is how the app is built. Here is exactly what stays, what never leaves, and how to wipe it.

Camera frames never leave your computer

Posture, distance, break, and habit checks all run on your computer using on-device models. Camera frames are processed in memory and are never saved to disk, never uploaded, and never stored by ScreenGuardian. There is no cloud video, no image sent anywhere, and no behavioral analytics streamed over the network.

What is stored locally

  • Session statistics: aggregated numbers like screen time and alert counts.
  • Alert log: timestamped entries as text only, with no imagery.
  • Calibration and preferences: your baseline values and settings.

All of it lives on your machine, in ScreenGuardian's local data folder, and stays there until you erase it.

Crash reports are off by default

Optional crash reports are turned off unless you switch them on. If you enable them, they send a small, scrubbed technical report after a crash, never your camera data or your activity.

The one time data leaves: a website account

The desktop app does not require an account. If you choose to create one on this website, your email is used to manage that account, that is data you deliberately hand over on the web, separate from the on-device app. Your posture, distance, and camera data are never part of it.

Erasing everything

You are always in control of the local record. Use the app's erase option (Erase all data) to remove stored metrics, preferences, cached charts, and logs from your computer. It is a two-step, arm-then-confirm action so you cannot wipe your history by accident, and your calibration is kept unless you choose to include it. You can also delete the data folder yourself at any time.

Common questions

Does ScreenGuardian use facial recognition?

No. It estimates posture and distance from body and face geometry; it does not identify who you are, build a faceprint, or match you against anyone. There is no microphone use either.

Is my data ever sold?

No. There is nothing to sell, your posture and camera data never leave your computer in the first place.
